BSNL 5G Rollout Expected to Launch by Sankranti Next Year 2025

The state-run telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), is set to launch its 5G service by Sankranti in 2025, according to L Sreenu, Principal General Manager of BSNL Andhra Pradesh. The announcement was made during a press conference, as reported by The Hindu. BSNL’s 5G rollout will initially be non-standalone (NSA) and will target regions where it has already introduced 4G services.

Currently, BSNL is focused on expanding its 4G network, with a goal of rolling out 100,000 sites by the end of the 2024-25 financial year. To date, the operator has deployed 25,000 sites and is continuing to increase this number. The 4G infrastructure, provided by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is designed to be upgradable to 5G, which will help minimize capital expenditure for BSNL’s 5G deployment.

The 5G launch will occur in phases, and while BSNL aims to compete with private telecom operators, the process may present challenges. Additionally, Sreenu announced a new initiative called ‘Sarvathra Wi-Fi’, which aims to ensure continuous Wi-Fi connectivity as users move from one location to another. This project leverages BSNL’s extensive PAN-India fiber network to offer seamless service, similar to what is already available from private operators.

As BSNL continues its efforts to roll out 4G and prepare for 5G, the launch of the new network is anticipated to coincide with the Sankranti festival in early January 2025.
